I would think the only time 4.10's are different is first gear. Other than that, if you want a lower gear, down shift. Does it really matter at what point in the drive train you change the ration between the flywheel and the tires?

I had 3.73's in my old ZR-1 and they were awesome IMO. Never drove a stock ZR-1 though.

Pete... I thought I was alone in my opinion re 410s! Ami's car, as you know, has them, and I get to go back and forth between her car and mine with the stock 345s. Yes, I love the torque, but when driving it I'm reminded of the feel of a pushrod motor: seems (in comparison) almost "peaky" to me.

Today, I'm leaning toward keeping the 345s and more HP. (How's the 390 coming?)

If I ever bought another Z, I wouldn't change the gears again. One of my favorite things about the car when it was stock was running at full throttle through 2nd gear to the redline; that was permagrin at its best. Switching to 4.10 gears seemed to shorten that sensation, which was a little disappointing. I enjoyed the switch overall, but definitely not enough to do it again.

Rippie spec'd the 3.73's for my car.
I have found them to be all around great.

With all this talk of gear swapping, and the possibility of going to 3:73 instead of 4:10.
I have a very lightly used Dana 3:73 gear set, with the correct, [almost impossible to find] speedo. correction gear for sale. $400.00 plus shipping. Jim.

several years ago I asked one of the ZR-1 crew here what made more sense..

I was considering porting the plenum and IH, which would lead to tuning etc or just do a 4.10

I did the 4.10 and have been happy with it, now I will say my motor is stock and I still run a stock DMF. but very happy with the combination
