I would recommend you remove the entire thermostat housing to replace the nipple. The original nipple is made of pot metal & is fragile with age. Go easy to avoid breaking it off. If in doubt, apply heat to the housing around nipple.
If it does twist off, take it to a competent machine shop for removal & thread chase. DO NOT TRY TO USE AN EASY-OUT. Thermostat housings are rare & expensive.
