Another aside, West and East Germany were reunified in October 1990 so its understandable ZF black tags made after that date were labeled "Made In Germany"

Rich, I see your 94 is #198, I am #009 and from what Jim @PowerTorque mentioned to me in the following, it is possible that your "black tag" is original.

"Jim told me that they (the OE's he has now) are NOS bearings from years ago. However, they are only for the 94-95 ZR-1. And they are only for the Blue Label ZF trans, which came into service with the 94 model. Now, there is an exception to this and that is when the 94 MY assembly started, there were not any Blue Label transmissions available, as there were still some Black Label transmissions still available from the end of the 93 MY build. So there are some early 94's that probably have the Black Label trans that were installed at the factory. If you have an early 94 with a Black Label, then these TOB's are not for you."

But to my understanding the amount of "black tags" that were installed in 94's is unknown, as is the last serial number known, before switching to the "blue tag" trans. I have to look at mine again, but I am most sure I have a "black tag" trans....

Not the cheap crap out there that is not worth the labor involved. I have another early model bearing too. I think I paid too much for it back in the day, but will dig it up and sell it too. I'm going to get rid of all the early model parts since my 95 will be my last ZR-1.

Craig,

I might b interested in the early model bearing...should fit my 90' right?

I spoke with Jim over the phone about this and I measured for him. Mine is #13 and I have a black tag. It IS the later style transmission.

Black tag = built in germany. Blue tag = state side.
90-93 early style. 94+ later style. No need to go into details im sure you all about the differences but thats how I have it.

I seriously "doubt" any comment as to "partial production builds" of the ZF for '94. I met a fellow with a '94 that insisted/argued his car was a "blue tag" but I visited him on a week-end and his was on a lift! It was a "black tag" and the build was the same as that in the image posted by RichS - I believe that all original '94 builds will match. - ALL

Now if a person wanted to discuss a '92 or '93 610 Nm vs maybe a 540 Nm that's entirely possible. There's very likely a mix in there somewhere!

Through the years there's been much "Internet Lore" regarding the ZF S6-40! Black/Blue - 610 Nm/540 Nm - Black tags were built with both and the blue tag were all the lesser.

Out of curiosity now, I have 3 throw outs from my GS. They look identical to the one out of the Z. The original one (yes I'm a pack rat) has the same markings on the bearing seal. All the dimensions between them are pretty much the same. The non original 2 were included with Centerforce clutch kits. One bearing has Japan on it the other China. They all fit on the trans the same.

OK Cliff, I'll reply to your PM if you want it. This is my last ZR-1 and when it dies I'm done.
