Re: "Straight" pipes
Thanks Daryll, figured that would be the case. Not gonna do the Corsa resonator at this point. I think I'm really looking to experiment with some "cheap sound" here for a while and then maybe 4 to 6 months down the road, I go full-boat: Corsas and SW headers with no cats.

Let me say that with the muffler by-passed it is freakin loud, open header loud. I just ordered some 18" Dynomax bullet mufflers to help quite it down a bit. System closed going through mufflers is super nice and quite, almost too quite. I think when the cutouts are open it is louder than normal mainly due to my HP upgrades. -Watson headers, X-pipe and cutouts @442rwhp = loud

Re: "Straight" pipes
Thanks for the input, Tony. I really loved the sound of my L98 running through only cats but consensus seems to be that an LT5 through just cats would be "race car" loud. Leaning toward just replacing the resonator with an x-pipe for a while, then doing the entire exhaust (SW headers with no cats and Corsa) 6 months down the road.

I have two stock resonators that I cut off and I was surprised that was all the muffling going on in there. It's design was to kill a certain frequency only that the mufflers didn't. The installation of a X-pipe will just flow better since it isn't at a 2.5" reduction like the resonator.

Re: "Straight" pipes
This is a stainless X-pipe removed from a 300 "Hemi" SRT. The pipe if cut just behind the clamps beyond the flange and just in front of the turn at the other end yields 28" of usable pipe. The pipe is 2.5"+ inside and can easily be expanded to slip-over the factory pipes forward and rearward of the resonator. This one was removed in a collision repair so the flanges and clamps were destroyed by the shop. The opening in the X is likely 4" X 1 7/8' or maybe just a bit larger. I would think it ideal for factory resonator replacement.
All of the MOPAR aren't X-pipes even though they're welded as such. I believe it needs to be a 300. MOPAR I was told felt that the weld of the intermediate pipes in this fashion helped control resonance regardless of whether it was opened or NOT. DSC_0142[1].jpg Dynomax does a 3" system for the SRT and the X-pipe can be purchased separately in 3" aluminized pipe. It's a 54449 and depending on a relationship with a Walker jobber is maybe a possibility for a very nice 3". The Walker number hints that it's likely a 50"+ part, lots of material to work with. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/wlk-54449/overview/ Last edited by WVZR-1; 04-22-2014 at 08:31 AM. |
