Great to have new technology on the market for us. I'd sure like to see a replacement DIS module on the market.

Is that Ron's Ruby Z??

Jerry,

Have you set a price point for this? Will it be supporting any other ignition systems?

Not yet..... Ron Hanselman will determine the pricing after all the costs are in. The system will be beta tested before pricing is finalized and released for public sale.

Please excuse my ignorance on this topic, but I'm not clear on how this would be used.

As a replacement for the stock ECM? Or for tuning cars that have such exotic mods that can't be handled by just re-tuning the prom in the stock ECM?

If you used it as a replacement for the stock ECM, where would you get all the necessary basic programing that GM put in originally?

I think I know the answer to your questions...Yes, this ECM is originally to be designed for turbo/supercharged cars that can't be effectively controlled by our stock ECM's. Other engine management systems for the ZR-1 have been around for years, but what Ron is trying to do with this one is to also control all of the basic programming plus provide for these hard to tune setups.

A bonus will be that with our ECM's rare and hard to find, there will be an option for all ZR-1s going forward.

If you have a stock, or nearly stock system and your ECM is functional, this ECM won't be for you, but if you want to add the Raptor LLC rear turbos, or some other forced induction system, you are going to want this...

As Dennis has said, if you're stock or nearly stock, you may have minimal need for this unless ECM supply or reman dries up.

The jury is still out on specifics. I think we need to wait till the full product is announced. Having said that, I'd be very surprised if you couldn't use the baseline setup it comes with to mimic the GM baseline.
Then you could presumably use that to improve control over emissions especially at where they like to measure at 2000 and 2500 rpm.
That is, learn and dial in what controls you need to to get best emissions possible. I'd be like having access to multiple chips that we use today only no pulling, burning new data and replacing chips.
We'll just have to wait and see. New technology retrofitted into 20 yr old cars. I love it.

No doubt there will be a learning curve to it but what doesn't have one anymore? Is this for highly modified high HP cars, surely. Can it be used in stock HP cars? Yes I'd bet so.

Well I thought I'd post this video today but I see I've been beaten by a mile!

I set out with one goal in mind so hopefully this will answer some if not all your questions.

That is, Plug and Play w/full functionality for a STOCK ZR-1 and beyond.

Here's a cut and paste from Ben at DYI (my weekly update):

We now have a running car...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJjw6eeYi_A

Most everything is ironed out now, with just a few wrinkles.
1. We can share data with the trip computer, just need to program our controller to send real packets.
2. The secondary cooling fan will turn on, but sometimes does not turn back off as commanded.
3. A few minor things to punch out, normal type items with a new application.
4. Have not tested the interaction with the traction control computer -- frankly the only way to do that would be to cause it to slip, and I don't subject customers' cars to that type of use.

The high / low selector switch is working, and can be set up 2 different ways. Program 1 works just like stock; spin to the right for full power, left for reduced power. Program 2 allows you to spin to the left to toggle high or low power (the opposite mode is selected) and hold to the right to engage launch control. We used a dedicated microcontroller for this.

Right after we took the video, I sorted out the idle control and got it holding 800 rpm warm.
We're pretty close to drawing up PCB's and getting them printed.

Thanks,

Ben

As Jerry stated, he will sell these via Jerry's Gaskets. I'll set the price point once all the cost are in. The $5000 price above is about double of what I'm shooting for. I hope to have an idea next month.

Cheers,
RH
