Re: 4.56's for the Strip and Street?

4.10s I've heard it said is ideal for the ZR-1; "would have been standard if not for mileage consideration" (as the story goes). I'm not so sure. A 4.30 has appeal too and would put me a little higher in 4th gear - more or less in the "wheel house" if I could reach 122-124 mph in the quarter. Pete doing 129.xx in 3rd on his stock bottom 350...still just blows me away. I've driven that car once, and I was in awe! It seems (to me) the added shift might be the issue, aside from launching the Z. Looking at Pete's times comparing times with the 3.45s to his 4.10s, I think the edge is with the 4.10s, but not by as much as one might hope. Others have espressed similar comparisons between those two ratios. I'd like to know what people thought of the 4.30s vs. 4.10s compared to 3.45s. I've not driven a 4.56 car, but an associate of mine had them, and I didn't like the trade-off for a street driven car - a personal thing, I admit. P.

A hundred years ago.......
I had a '68 Chevelle, small block, headers, double-pumper, accel dual-point, mild hydraulic cam..and 4.56 posi with factory air shocks..first gear was unreal, but very, very brief.....I think the damn thing wouldn't run much faster than 110-115 flat out....I bought it new, and traded for a '70 when I came back from VN.....I have regretted that deal ever since...
The 4.56 was fun, but not the most user-friendly ratio... |

Re: 4.56's for the Strip and Street?
If i had to guess i would say my Z is 3200 without me in it.
So let's do the math 129 mph at 3200 add 200 lbs and minus 2 mph so now i'm at 127 you guys get the idea. What i know about drag racing is when shifting you wanna keep the rpm's as close to pick power as possible example if you peak is 6500rpm when you crab the next gear you wanna be close to 6500 so if you shift at 7200 rpms will drop to 6000 where as if you shift at 6500 your rpms will drop to 5300,you make more power at 6000 then at 5300. Pete

Re: 4.56's for the Strip and Street?
Yeap
I tried different rpm also with no luck. I have my shift light set at 7200 by the time i crab the next gear it's at about 7400. I'm all about MPH then ET If we have two Z's one runs 10.50's @ 120 the other 11.0's @135 they go at it from a roll guess who is winning that race. I don't want a 1/4 mile queen i will sacrifice some ET for MPH. I will test 3.45 vs 410's this spring, for MPH difference. Here's a video of Phils LPE415 Callaway body Z running 10's http://video.search.yahoo.com/video/play;_ylt=A2KLqIJraqJQeU0AZCv7w8QF;_ylu=X3oDMTBrc3 VyamVwBHNlYwNzcgRzbGsDdmlkBHZ0aWQD?p=corvette+zr1+ lt5&vid=52afeb14bb3756ecf784c8f96ee3af41&l=&turl=h ttp%3A%2F%2Fts1.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DV.49505604 18758940%26pid%3D15.1&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.street fire.net%2Fvideo%2Flingenfelter-415-lt5-zr1-corvette_83764.htm&tit=Lingenfelter+415+LT5+ZR-1+Corvette&c=24&sigr=12b9egc0j&fr=yfp-t-525&tt=b MPH Baby Pete
