Start with removing the door panel, to remove the bolt that holds the door handle, you have to remove the 3 screws that hold the door latch, then let the door latch slide down to access the bolt to remove the door handle..

My bet is you have a bad switch on the back of the door lock, I have a spare from an 87 that may be the same that I could bring when your doing this...( if I can find it)
