Re: Cold Air intake
The claw sucks so unless you like the way it looks? I don't care for it - looks gimmicky.
Plus its 3 filters to clean and they are small filters which impedes. Your best bet is a Open Lid Filter and call it a day. Last edited by xlr8nflorida; 12-06-2009 at 12:07 AM. |

Re: Cold Air intake
i have 2 z industries air cleaner that require you to modify the rad shroud .they also have slits in the bottem of the intake so water has a place ti go if you get caught in the rain . i have been caught in some serious down pours and no prob so far . i like the fact that i am getting cooler air than the stk set up .JMHO

Re: Cold Air intake
Yes but none were really CAI, I dyno tested stock, cut lid with K&N and the "Claw". They were all very close in performance with the claw yielding a small advantage - mainly in mid range torque. A real CAI system would need to be road tested rather than dyno tested - I think a series of timed rolling start runs would be the best way to do it.

Re: Cold Air intake
This was a while back...but I called Marc H. on an unrelated subject, and before the conversation ended I asked him about the benefits/improvements of changing over to the SLP (3 fingered claw). I was watching one on eBay at the time. He said there was no noticeable improvement to engine. Being visually appealing seems to be the sole reason for investing in one.

Re: Cold Air intake
Here is my original post from the CF, again this is not really a CAI test as all the intake systems are drawing static air from the stock location. Interesting to note is the small torque hump between 4000 and 5400rpm - this is the "Claw". The "Claw" also came out on top in average horsepower - 5hp above the others.
Today myself and forum member/dyno owner TJ Wong set out to find the truth regarding C4 air intakes. We dyno tested 3 different air intakes on my Lingenfelter 368cid LT5. Tested today were: stock with paper element, stock with K&N element and a cut lid, and finally SLP's "claw" tri-cone filter design. All dyno pulls were made with starting coolant temps at 195 degrees F. Here are the results. Stock with paper, two identical pulls: 477rwhp. Avg. peak HP 477 Stock with K&N and cut lid, three pulls: 471, 475, 480rwhp. Avg. peak HP 475.3 SLP tri-cone "claw", three pulls: 477, 478, 481rwhp. Avg. peak HP 478.7 It would appear that the naysayers are mostly correct about C4 air intakes, not much to be gained here. Both Tom and I were rather suprised with the results. We had expected to see some small but visible gains with the cut-lid and SLP, instead we got a bunch of tests with peak numbers being basically the same or well within normal dyno pull to pull variation. The SLP unit does seem to have a small advantage over the others but suprisingly it's in mid range power not peak (see dyno graph average power #'s). __________________

Re: Cold Air intake
And that was on a 368, not a stock engine etc.
I was told by my tuner I picked up like 12 HP with the cut lid but I'm not so sure I buy it. |

Re: Cold Air intake
Robert,
Thanks for posting your test results again. All, I'll try to take some time to post pics of the Automotive Performance International, Inc. for those that have not seen that one. I don't know what happened to the pics I had on photobucket as it shows no pics now. No problem, I'll take some new ones for the group and post here. |
