The dealer admitted not knowing anything about car, or ZR-1's in general other than what he read on the internet. He asked me what it would take to get it in decent shape since he sold fairly high end classics, and when I finished with the list of things I noticed in just 5 minutes, he asked if I would buy it from him "cheap". Needless to say I was not interested, and wished him well. So he obviously blew it out to someone that took it to New York and they decided to sell it rather than put too much money into it. The moral of the story is that you get what you pay for. There are exceptional deals that come along every once in a while, but this was not an example of one unless you were looking to part it out. ![]() |

Excellent post. ![]() I wonder why people on this forum keep talking about deals that are not really deals. All you have to do is look at the photos for more then 60 seconds and you can see the hood is not lined up properly on the drivers side. The front bumper looks like it was painted with a can of spray paint and is peeling all over the place. The rear bumper is peeling as well. The black rub strips were even oversprayed, god knows what the weatherstripping looks like ![]() The car's photos were taken wet which is a trick to make paint look better then it actually is. That car is easily a 15-20k car by the time you get everything straightened out and it has high mileage. On top of that you have an accident car on your hands that was repainted. There are so many decent ZR-1's in the $16,000-$25,000 why go to the bargain basement? If all you can afford is $9,000 then save your $ or if you just have to have the ZR-1 now then buy it for $9,000 but rest assured, you will be putting a ton of $$ into it that you won't ever see back on resale value. Trust me, someone who pays $9,000 for a ZR-1 and alot of $$ in repairs will one day be concerned with resale value. In regards to a deal for parting out. Yes, I guess there was some $$ in it. But honestly, stripping a car, inventory, dealing with selling parts and then getting stuck with the parts that are not in demand. I wonder how much $$ there really is in it. I mean, are you paying yourself the hours to strip car, inventory, sell? Even the big dollar items like motors. The people that are holding them seem to be holding them for YEARS. Nobody wants or maybe I should say NEEDS an LT-5 because they are bulletproof engines. That being said, the people who do have the LT-5s will make their $$$, its just going to be down the road some. People typically don't like buying expensive parts that more then likely they will never need. A good example of that is the Thermostat housing. How many guys are really going need one of those. Few and far between. So when you buy a part like that you know you will be using it yourself one day or holding it for a long time until the right buyer comes along. It needed an interior and it had been hit (other then the 1/4 panel damage it had). but to be honest if I exclude all the mods (wheels, exhaust, headers ETC) I still am below $16K in my car. I exclude the mods because I would have done them to either car. granted I know C4s pretty well since I had my 89 for 15 years and did a 89-91 dash conversion. is my ZR-1 perfect, nope, it needs better paint and possibly a hood, but the hood is not bad to the point where it is obvious. I have done all the work myself (except an alignment) and the 'Bargain Basement' Car was all I really could purchase as I had to sell the 89 to pay for the 90.. Do I regret it? no. Although when I first drove it I wondered WTF I did, but driving it now.. No way to do I regret it

Well one has the be cautious with ebay thats for sure. Always look at the car in Person and bring someone who knows what these are all about.
I got this 92 for 10.2K from ebay. Do you remember this one? I ended up getting a 1100 refund on it because it was listed as a private sale which ir was not. Told the guy either you send me the difference or i put it on a carrier back to ya. Quick check ![]() Most of the time You get what you pay for sure. Ebay for sure. Right now out here the is a 94 out here local guy cant sell it, with 80K or so Very nice I bet you bring 15K cash you would drive it home. Few years ago the same car would have been 25K. ![]() |
