Nice story 8cam, it was a nice read.

But what's that 1-4 gears story? Can anyone explain? And what about that transmission noise?

I'm a bit concerned about ZR-1s transmissions, I know it is the weak part of these cars.

the zr1 zf 6 speed trannys are not delicate at all. they were based on truck transmissions and take quite a beating but being in a zr1 lt5 car it is going to take a ton of abuse. My car has 45k miles and the previous owner put it on the track for some track sessions and it still performs like new. he replaced the clutch etc.. but the transmission still works fine despite hard abuse. During the introduction of the zr1 in europe, Jim Ingles did constant transmission clutch poppings and burnouts etc.. and the car never broke. The porsche broke a half shaft and other cars were showing signs of wear but the zr1 never let up and performed great the entire press gathering. The car was praised by the germans as being a "hammer" which to them means far beyond expectations. The transmission is always going to be the weak link in the drive train in any car so it is not surprising that they break most often. I think the zf 6 speed tranny is a great tranny and was considered state of the art at that time.

Very happy to read that you disagree when I say that the ZR-1 got a bad transmission.

I'm still learning guys...

What's that story about that 1-4 gears?

To meet EPA fuel economy the transmission would force a 1 to 4 gear shift under certain driving conditions. Skip-shift. Easily bypassed with no detrement to the çar. Same feature was on the C5. George

Oh alright I understand now. Fixed simply by unplugging a connector, no CEL?

You need to buy a plug in bypass thing so the computer will not read the missing module as a fault. Not much money.

Concur easy mod simple plug and play most of the Major Corvette parts houses have this plug in harness....

This 1-4 Option was as known as Skip Shift and was a pure EPA fuel saving idea. GC
