Smile Lamp size 74, buy it and throw it in the console

Well mines in my glove box but not every ZR-1 has a glove box so throw it in your armrests for my MY 94-95 friends. Most folks don’t know that im a daily driver and I drive my Z about 60 Miles daily from work to home. My ZR-1 gets a lot more wear and tear than most ZR-1 owners so I notice when things don’t work.

Case in point. I highly recommend every ZR-1 owner or C4 owner for that matter should stock up on type 74 mini lamps. Why? Well you will be surprised how many places in the car those little buggers fit and it’s not a normal size that most people have on hand in the garage. Sometimes they are a bugger to find as well as some stores have maybe one or two blub cards on hand depending on the auto parts store.

These little lights are behind 90% of the orange night glow lights that barely illuminate when you drive your car with the parking lights or headlights on. Even the orange light under your rear view mirror is a type 74 bulb. I have been through 3 of these blubs so far this year which I am sure is a mixture of the age of the car (I drive a 91) and the amount of use per week I get out of it which adds age to all the components.

Just something to think about you swing into the auto parts store next time for a bottle of oil. May save you a trip back some day

I’ve learned a few tricks along the way on these bulbs. I just wanted to share

Under the mirror the bulb light can be accessed by using a small jeweler’s screwdriver next to the diagonal amber lens that fits within a small black plastic square. Don’t poke the screwdriver into the diagonal slot or you break the lens. Gently pry out the black plastic square housing to reveal the bulb

Under the door handle light in front of the clear fuse like light bulb is a double grey wire. It is retained into the door handle light housing with a small cotter pin. Push the pin through with a jeweler screwdriver to release the blub and the wire from the door light handle housing. The blubs maybe difficult to remove but gently pry them out with a pair of needle nose pliers.

Have fun GC
