ZR-1 Oil
I was talking with some guys racing at Grand Bend Motorsports Park (a drag strip about 1 hr. from my home) and they advised me to use Mobil One 15w50 in my LT-5. Has anyone used this 15w50 in a ZR-1? If so how does it perform as far as cam chain noise, tensioner noise ect. What are the pros and cons of this viscosity oil?.

Tom:If you do a lot of racing or high RPM then that type of viscosity oil is right for the car I do not think it would affect the cam timing chain as far as noise I think the filter type has a lot to do also. In the summer I would use it if I was changing oil.Joseph |

Joseph: I am going to change my oil this weekend and might try the 15w50 but just want to make sure it won't damage my motor. What about bearing tolerances could they be affected by thicker oil?. The tempature around here (Ontario,Canada) has been averaging 28-30 celsius (82-86 fahrenheit) and the 90 ZR-1 is driven 3-4 times a week.Tom

1990 QUASAR BLUE
Tom,I have heard about a lot of guys using it. I've thought about it myself, but I keep coming back to the conclusion that G.M. pays those guys in the white coats a lot of money to figure out what's best. Thats why I just stick with the Mobil 1 10w30. FWIWMike |

I switched to the 15-50 last year. It cut down my consumption quite a bit. I have 103K mi., and am driving in 100-120 degree summer heat.It doesn't change chain rattle much. That is more a filter issue (if not tensioner/guide problems).(Edited by dallas at 7:54 pm on July 18, 2003)

If cost isn’t an issue and you want the excellent protection then I would recommend RedLine 10W40 synthetic oil. |
