Oil dipstick and tube

this is a question for you guys running headers on your z. i installed stainless works headers on my 91 and had to tweak the oil dipstick tube so that it attaches to the #8 cylinder exhaust tube. problem is now that the engine is in the car, i cannot get the dipstick to go down the tube as the blower housing is in the way. i called lokar as they have a flexible tube and talked to their tech department and they told me that they never tried to install a tube in the zr-1 motor and could not say if it would fit or not.

my question is: what oil dipstick/tube are you using?

I have a Lokar stick on my C5 with a custom steel tube the same dimensions as the factory C5 tube.

The handle is the Lokar LS version. Just test fitted on a dip stick tube I have in the garage. It will not fit. The Z tube is a smaller diameter. The LS tube is swaged at the top to a larger ID.

That said you can likely remove the stick from the handle and braze in the flexible Lokar stick keeping the handle stock.

Paul Workman has made up some dipstick relocation brackets in the past. I bought one from him and it worked very nicely.

i have reached out to paul workman for one of his famous oil tube brackets. now just need to sit back and see if he can help me out...or just get a piece of steel and my bmfh to fab one.

The bracket is very easy to fab up as a DIY project. Ordinarily, I'd be happy to fab one up for (anybody) needing one. But, just now all my stuff for fabbing them up is still packed in boxes (I just last month moved to Missouri and the new garage/shop is just now under construction.

I should be able to accommodate in another month or so. But, in the mean time, here are some pix of one. Anyone with simple tools and ability can whip one up for themselves - no problem!

Here is a photo of the back side of the bracket showing how the prongs on the stock tube slide over the little square shank under the head of the stove bolt.

The bolt holes are 5/16" and I use a 1/2" bit to drill out the notch for the tube to pass under the bracket. (NOTE: I use a Dremel with a cut-off wheel to open the 1/2" hole into a "U" notch.)

The one bracket hole is held against the upper/forward flange hole for the #6 exhaust tube, positioning the dipstick between the #4&6 tubes. The other hole is where the stove bolt goes, with the nut facing the outside (away from the motor).
