Front brakes both sides dragging
I took my 92 out today for a quick spin and when I got back I noticed a hot brake smell. Checked rears nice and cool, checked fronts and both very hot! Hot enough I couldn?t touch the Rims. I do know my clutch is starting to leak by. If I hold it to the floor in gear it gradually engages. Are these two systems connected? Please excuse my lack of mechanical aptitude. I did put the car in neutral while waiting for the brakes to cool and the car did roll easily. Any ideas?

Re: Front brakes both sides dragging
Just a guess as I went thru this a few years back. Front brake lines old and collapsing on the inside or bad Master cylinder. I did Master first and still had the issue went to all SS lines to the calipers problem solved.

Does the master cylinder control both the clutch and the brake hydraulics? I?m guessing this could be a laughable question. |

The brake master controls front and rear brakes. About 60% of the braking power is supplied to the front brakes, and 40% to the rears. Thats controlled by a proportioning valve. I would agree that you can have bad rubber brake hoses and possibly a bad master cylinder and even still, calipers that could be in need of a rebuild or replaced with rebuilt units.

Re: Front brakes both sides dragging
If you have a floor jack, jack up the fronts, one side at a time, motor OFF, emergency brake off, transmission out of gear, see if the wheel (each side one at a time) will spin freely by hand. If you are unsure about doing this own your own...TAKE IT TO A SHOP. Be careful and use proper precautions when jacking up any vehicle. (put a block in front and behind one of rear wheels to prevent rolling). This will tell you if the front brakes are dragging or locked up. Front brakes will most always be much hotter than rear on a street car.

Re: Front brakes both sides dragging
Guess I should have clarified a bit better I am referring to the brake master cylinder and original rubber lines to the calipers. As to your clutch issue most likely needs clutch and or slave cylinders replaced or rebuilt, if you do one I would do both. Many posts on the clutch parts here just do a search.
