Default Amazon engine oil vs the world

It is not made by Amazon, but a large oil distributor.

The test look good.

Anyone want to try this in their Z and report back?

Your suggestion reminds me of a cereal advert from years ago...

Kid A: "I'm not going to try it. YOU try it!"

Kid B: "Not me! I'm not going to try it!"

Camera pans over to another younger kid (kid "C") packing the new cereal in his mouth:

Kid A: "Hey, look! He likes it! Hey, Mikey!!!

You wanna be the guinea pig? Go right ahead! (Let us know how YOUR LT5 likes it!)

Not gonna happen!

It does not have the additives that the the LT5 requires. Mobile 1 doesn’t either. I wouldn’t risk it, especially when you KNOW it doesn’t meet the LT5 requirement.

Can I be reminded what additives we need (and which oils have them)?

I thought Mobil 1 High Mileage had what we need. No?

Thanks.

ZDDP (zinc phosphate) is the additive that was reduced back in early 2000 (?) primarily to ensure healthy life span for catalytic converter.
Mobile 1 high mileage 10w-30 and 5w-30 have 800 ppm - same as standard Mobile 1- per Mobil 1 product data sheet. Interesting that I recall High Mileage line use to have 1000 ppm last time I checked the same data sheet.
It's disturbing that the industry would change product content without proper notification mainly to appease the auto manufacturer.

My understanding is that LT5 with overhead cam design results in less pressure to cam lobes compared to push rod/lifter set up in OHV motors negating concern over premature cam lobe wear due to reduction of ZDDP.
If it makes you feel better, one option is to add ZDDP additive.

Do not use ZDDP additives in the LT5 unless you know enough information about the additive such that you can use it in amounts that result in 1000-1200 ppm zinc.

Too much ZDDP is as bad or even worse than too little because it increases the level of corrosion inside the engine. Lubricant experts call this "chemical wear".

Also, high concentrations of ZDDP destroy the catalytic reactant inside cat converters.

If you are worried about enough ZDDP in a OHC flat-tappet engine, use an oil such as Driven Racing Oil LS30 (a 5W30) or Red Line 10W30. Both have levels of ZDDP slightly, but not greatly, elevated over Mobil 1

As for the Amazon engine oil in an LT5...you guys are joking, right?

Has anyone actually ever seen an LT5 with cam wear that resulted from this ZDDP issue? I doubt it. The loads on the cam lobes just aren’t that great. I’m aware of some cams that failed but that was apparently due to poor hardening.

I wouldn’t risk it, even if I haven’t experienced the issue. Best not to error against the GM recommendation and that of the owners on the forum.

1994 #256 - when disassembled in 2014 with 110,000 miles due to head gasket failure showed no abnormal wear on any cam lobes or lifters. Intake was replaced with stage 1 regrind but exhaust cams went right back in. Now with another 50,000 miles, car runs great! When rebuilt, went with 4” pistons, 3.75” mini-stroker crankshaft, and heads were ported.

I added 1/2 bottle of ZDDP with every oil change a few times back in 2010-2012 and been using Mobile 1 high mileage since 2011. Now that I know zinc and phosphate content is the same, I think I will go back to regular Mobile 1.
