In addition, we found no verifiable difference between a paper filter & the filter being completely removed. So much for the K&N myth about added horsepower. K&N is not worth the cost & cleaning hassle for a filter that has no benefit save for being reusable.

Re: Forced Air Induction.....(maybe)
I've seen tests where k&n type filters let through 18 times more dirt than a paper insert, as well as clogging 4 times faster. Not a good investment.

Re: Forced Air Induction.....(maybe)
Ive used K&N but Marc H recommended use of paper element which I have now switched to.

Re: Forced Air Induction.....(maybe)
I agree with you all and I wouldn't pull the trigger on one for a mod for horsepower one of the previous owners did on my car and I really do like the aggressive look that it gives the car. IMO... You really are making me wonder(and maybe the original poster) can you have the best of both worlds?? Can I leave the diffuser and do a open lid system? Just something to think about if you like the looks but want to get rid of the choke down point...
Steve,

Re: Forced Air Induction.....(maybe)
most of the fancy intake stuff is eye wash that doesn't do anything for power
I tested a clean paper element and a k&n back to back and there wasn't any difference. Graham said the factory stuff was good up to over 750 I haven't ever tried running the car without the air filter (and probably won't) but I can't imagine that it's much of a restriction I saw the fancy jeal stuff and loved it, but it's made out of unobtanium now and I don't know if it works better than stock not much power left on the table with stock so if it ain't broke......

These aftermarket air intakes may sound nice, but power claims are inflated on N/A engines. There are some nice powergains on OEM forced inducted engines, as superchargers are esp. sensitive to pre blower restrictions. I did some at the track installations of some K&N Fuel Injection Performance Kits. Performance increases ended up being greater as the humidity/temp dropped as the night progressed, over any sort of power gain from the air intake/filter difference.

Ditto for my cars. K&N was a pain to clean and oil and added no benefit. Used the standard AC Delco filter and removed it when racing. -Bob
