Default Short throw shifters and lift ring.

When you replace or modify your shifter, what do you do about a reverse lock out? Seems like it would be tough to go from 5th to reverse, but Bill B says it can be done up to 80 mph, once.

Bill just installed one of his lift-ring shifters on my car a couple months ago. I was under the impression that the crash-through detent on the later models was a function of the transmission itself, not the shifter. So even if you could install a non lift-ring on an early car, you'd have no crash-through feature and that would be VERY dangerous indeed. Hope this helps.

I had Bill shorten the original shifter but maintain the reverse lock out. Best of both worlds, in my view.

Short throw and short shifter, or just short shifter?

Just short shifter. I would expect that short throw and short shifter would require more effort to shift than I was looking for.

Not to worry, you will get used to not having the lock out. I do not have one on my Hurst and while I am careful from 5 to 6, never needed to do a very fast shift in that area. Once I am in 3rd, am home free dusting somebody off.

Somebody explain the "crash through" feature. Is it part of the shifter, or part of the tranny.

The '95 crash-through has internal transmission/shifter differences.

There was actually even a TSB/Recall that effected the first few LT5 builds in '95 regarding "unable to shift into reverse".

The TSB/recall is referenced here at the CAC:

I have the Hurst on my 94 black tag (later style just built in Germany), and its quite easy to go to reverse. So easy in fact I would have to make sure I keep an eye if someone else were to drive the car and I even have to pay attn myself even shifting easily. Not too happy about it but 6th is just a fuel mileage gear anyways so like mentioned above.. its a slow easy shift once relaxing anyways.

My C4 before my current ZR was a 95 coupe w a 6 speed. I liked the crash-thru so much that I had Bill B. convert mine during the rebuild of my black tag gearbox. I guess I was already accustomed to no lift ring. It does require a good effort to find reverse, it won't be flying in there under the shifter's own weight and inertia like the early style without the lock ring.
