To answer your question - yes. - Turns out this was the OP's question.
I believe, even if you upgrade the head unit, Bose amp/speaker combination is worthwhile due to speaker enclosure designed specifically to work with the system.
I ripped out the entire system in my 91 Z and installed a after market system. Considering money and effort, I was disapponited. For this reason, my second go around for my 94 Z, I replaced the head unit with Pioneer AVIC Z140, kept factory amp/speakers and added a 10" low profile subwoofer. I am very pleased with the result.
