Default Need an ac compressor

Last year the ac compressor on my 90 decided it had had enough and
locked up on me on a 108 degree day. Belt squealing and everything.
Went to get it replaced today and surprise surprise gm discontinued
it. Now I'm looking for opinions here, Should I track down a oem unit
or will an aftermarket one do? If aftermarket is good which one
should I go for?

Take a look at: buyautoparts.com if no one on the forum can provide. I have found them to be good knowledgeable people to deal with.

Is it beyond rebuilding? They can be rebuilt right?

Yes they can be rebuilt but Phil and a couple others have found what seems to be a reasonably priced unit for "the shelf"! Also a new doesn't come with clutch, coil or pulley so in Kevin's case here he first needs to determine just what it is that he really needs. His remark needs "compressor" doesn't quite get it!

I have no idea. The compressor locked up on me last year. The car is drivable as she sits now...been driving her like this for a little while now. The blower still works, the belt squeals like a car who's tail has been stepped on

I've gotten rebuilt AC compressors from http://www.discountacparts.com
1993 Chevy 3500 - Been running for 9 years.
2002 Chrysler T&C - Been running for 3 years.

I'll be rebuild my 90's Z with in a month or 2. Doesn't look that hard to do

Looks like they have a AC Kit - Complete Repair Kit Including OEM Compressor and New Accessories (Oil, expansion, drier, o-rings) for $535

Don't forget to check e-bay... They always seem to have lots of LT5 NOS AC Compressors for sale at reasonable prices: here's an oem compressor clutch, drier, oil and o rings for $395.
