I replaced my gas strut with a new one, # 609-623, from MAD few years ago. Lifting the hood the first inches off the locks is not heavier than any other car and from about half way it will spring up by it self. There is no comparison to the old failed strut that just worked as a support.

Carter, the easiest way to get the small cylinders on is with some help, disconnect the main strut. This will allow the hood to got forward enough the slip the short cylinders on the studs.Out of the box the short cylinders are abut 3/4 on an inch too long to slip on the studs with the main cylinder connected and compressing these by hand aint gonna happen.
