Default Fuel pumps In tank filter

Does anybody have a clue how to put the in tank fuel pump filter back on the pump? I have to replace both fuel pumps and I took off the filter and can't get it back on. I'm talking about this: It won't go on. Is their secret handshake that has to be done?

There are three pointed tabs on the metal ring. Make sure those are still bent in to grab the plastic and retain the strainer.
