LT5 tech in JAX, Fl needed ...

Hi Guys,

The starter on my '91 ZR-1 is non-responsive (it's my 3rd). Anyone know of an LT5 tech in the Jacksonville Fl area? I have the new starter and gaskets from Jerry's but I've never dug into the guts, so I'd like someone with a modicum of 'what NOT to do's help.

Do you have a bit of wrenching ability? If you do, this is a pretty straight forward job. The plenum looks scarier than it it. Plus it is a "right of passage" to do a LT5 plenum pull.

I did my first last year and everything went back together with no problems.

Thanx for the quick reply. If this was golf, they'd call me a 'duffer' :-/ I can wrench (old school mostly) but I've heard that unless you follow certain steps on the LT5, you can do more damage than good. I've looked online for how-to pics & videos to use as a guide but haven't had any luck ... so here I am.

The older I get the less patient I am. I may be neck-deep in ignition coils and fried solenoids soon ...

If you have gone through three starters in a short period of time I would recommend checking the starter circuit wiring carefully, as well as the ignition switch.

My thoughts as well.

OP: Before the clutch safety switch finally gives up entirely, the starter appears to become intermittent - works one time, then nothing the next. "Gone through 3 starters..." Never heard of such a thing, UNLESS the thrust pin on the solenoid Bendix was too short. Now, THAT would/could be trouble, i.e., would break or damage teeth on the ring gear. But, yours doesn't sound like the Bendix is the problem (at all).

Just exactly what is the symptoms of your failed starters? I ask, because in the 13 years of being a ZR-1 owner and member of this FORUM, I've never heard of anyone going through 3 starters in any length of time. Something is amiss here, & I agree with the (above) in that something else is going on, no?

There is a ZR-1 Registry member in the Jax FL town that is pretty familiar with the basic LT5 maintenance. He may check in w/ you when he sees this.

Hi Paul, I appreciate the thoughts and advice. I'll have all these things checked again. All the starters failed basically the same way. Intermittently at first (cold also but mostly when hot), then eventually completely. Each time the starter was replaced, the ignition system was given a green light and there were no start issues again for years. In 2012 at 109,415 miles, I had Aaron Scott run an 'ignition bypass / pre-oiler' system that worked great anytime the regular start process failed. This starter (Aaron's) failed in mid-2019 at @ 111,000 miles while I was on an overseas contract and I'm just getting back stateside and attending to it now.

If only I could fit "Special Needs" on a license plate ...
