Header Bolts
Doing my headers right now. Is everybody using the Stage 8 bolts? Are there any other alternatives?

Re: Header Bolts
Temporarily, I installed some from ACE H/W - lock washers too.
That doesn't sound very sexy, does it? And, just to be safe, I slathered some RED (high temp) RTV on both sides of the gaakets. I've since pulled the motor twice, and meant to get some sexy header bolts, and I will...really...no REALLY! Well, that was 4 mountain runs, 2 years of Wanna Go Fast runs (including the one where I "got air"...some 20k miles now and I promise I'll get around to installing some sexy header bolts...ONE of these days...soon as I get a leak OR someone points and laughs: "Oh, look! He's got ACE H/W bolts on his headers! Hahaha!" Yeah, I should get me some sexy locking header bolts and pitch these ACE bolts in the trash. But, sometimes simple and elegant is better than complex and wonderful! Besides, they serve as a distraction: keeps people from noticing my stainless headers are not ceramic coated either! OMG...the horror!

Re: Header Bolts
I bought the stage 8 and the jesus clips would not fit in the groove cut in the head of the bolt. I other words, my $75 dollars worth of bolts were as good as Paul's $5 worth of bolts.

Re: Header Bolts
It's been awhile since I've done mine, but I remember one thing I liked about the Stage 8 bolts was the ability to also use a hex wrench to spin them in. That was handy since some are hard to get to.

Re: Header Bolts
Just thinking out loud here, but why use a "grade 8" when the bolt is screwed into aluminum? Yeah, I used 'em on Ami's SBC (cast iron) heads, but grade 8 on aluminum?
And, a agree - far as having hex-heads go (tho a 12 point works on the (I'll call it) star type bolts, IIRC.

Re: Header Bolts
I used BBK header bolts, think they were $20 a kit (bought 2) Holding up fine. I also use just a touch of high temp silicon on header gaskets. Usually never have issues with leaks or backing out. I did re-tighten after a few head cycles. Last time I checked they were tight.

Re: Header Bolts
Man... I forgot how much of a pain in the a$$ these are to get out! Doing engine mounts and O2 sensors while I’m in there. (Flywheel, clutch and shifter too) I’m sure I’ll find a few more “while I’m in these’s” too.

Re: Header Bolts
So I’m going with these... Mr Gasket, stainless, self locking, hex and Allen head and thread sealant already applied. Kind of neat having Summit Racing just down the road.
