Amazing how fast automatic gearboxes are now shifting.
Another reason why manual transmissions may not be around in the future. For comparison, a good manual shift time is ~500 milliseconds. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shift_...ite_note-DSG-2 Gearbox shift times (Fastest to slowest)

It is amazing what Manufactures are doing with automatic transmissions now. The new 10 speeds developed between GM and Ford, I haven't heard a bad word about them. So let me ask you all a question........If you had a chance to buy the new ZR1 or the Mid engine Vette coming soon, and it offered an automatic, would you go auto?? It can shift insanely faster than any human, never misses a shift, and makes the car faster. Or do you think not rowing your own gears in a Corvette is just Blasphemy......... In my opinion, I don't mind an auto, if it makes the car faster. That may make me a goober, but a goober with a faster car than yours

Yes, amazing. I drove a buddies C7 Z06 a while back and the shifts, particularly the down shifts, were virtually instantaneous! With new cars I'm all for whatever makes it faster. The manual trans is really already a thing of the past as will be the internal combustion engine. That... I will miss.

I test drove a BMW M6 turbo w/ an auto which had multiple driving modes.
We did the "Auto X" course in "Competition". I never once felt like it was on the wrong gear! If the shush box is like that one, I'd take the auto in my Z. ![]()

No no no. Faster ok, but that was one of two requirements when buying my car.

After the gear change is made, the engine RPM has to change to match the new gear ratio - or the clutch slips - or the tires spin.
Reducing the RPM drops needed between shifts will help. The creates the need for more gears. Looks like the 2018 mustang is taking this approach. 2018 Ford Mustang GT gets to 60 in under 4 seconds - but only when equipped with the new 10 speed automatic transmission http://autoweek.com/article/car-news...nder-4-seconds |

I'm an old gearjammer from way back, but these new automatics seem to me the best of both worlds. More speeds to keep engine at best rpm, torque converter for smoother launch, much easier in stop' go traffic. They match rpm when downshifting. What's not to like?
Well, it's weight, autos in the past have always been heavy lumps. And durability, but my ZF6 is the only component I've rebuilt TWICE, and it is surely no lightweight at over 150lbs. The "tiptronic" in my 335i made me a believer. My vote is for the auto, but others will differ, maybe they still prefer carburetors too. Sent from my iPhone using ZR-1 Net Registry
