How many stockers are having issues passing smog?
Please name yr stock or what mods If you can list the categories you are off by and how much along with required standard. Thanks!

1990 stock, passed Calif. smog last Monday no problem. 64k miles. Fresh spark plugs, o2 sensors, no vacuum leaks, manual control of fans to keep temp at 180.

Re: Owners with smog issues inside
1991 bone stock @16,000 miles failed twice. No trouble codes and car running great. The Nox level was over the 502 max limit. I've got a few easy mods but whenever it's time for a smog I, well can't divulge that here but I get some help from Mr.H only because the State has continually dropped the standards. It went from 702 max Nos down to 502. Last time it smogged I think it was 300 Nox. What's interesting, this car with 6000 original miles would not pass current smog regs today. It doesn't seem legal that the State can keep dropping the standards. Looks like this might come to a head if it drops anymore.I might add that whenever it's time for a smog a smog check all my legal mods come off and the car goes in bone stock, considering how hard it is to get it to pass I need all the help I can get.

Re: Owners with smog issues inside
Had a helluva time getting my bone-stock 90 to pass, kept failing nox levels too - vacuum leaks, o2 sensors, throttle body sticky, coils, plugs, wires and more. Finally got it to pass and now I never have to worry about it again, thanks to the 25 year rolling exemption here in GA. Oh and it runs like a bat outta hell now.

It should be noted that most of the problems are with the early cars that don't have an EGR valve.

Re: Owners with smog issues inside
I have a plan "C" to cheat like Volkswagen by not only doing the cooling fans on sooner, but lowering the ignition timing tables below 3000 rpm (primary ports) on a smog test chip.
If VW could fake the funk on NOx so can we. That said I have been hitting ok numbers the last couple of times. |
