Spare tire
Have any of you Brothers actually used the puny little spare the GM provided on our Z's? I mean, I know it's a safety device but at a width ratio of 155, would the car even drive straight if it was put on the rear? Tonight I removed my spare and the storage device in order to clean and inspect the area above where the spare sits. I'm thinking that I'm not even going to put it back on and just carry the tire repair kit and inflator that I used to carry in my C5. I'm planning on a new set of rims/tires so my oem A molds will be in the garage if I need to get someone to run by and pick one up in case if a flat. Just wondering what was the thoughts of the Brotherhood on this topic

Re: Spare tire
I've needed a spare tire just a few too many times in my life. For a street car, I have one hanging back there. It's a 17" GTO spare to clear C5 front brakes, but still a spare that fits all four corners.
To answer your other question...it's round, rolls, and if you lay into the throttle, you can leave a 2" wide rubber strip at will in the first three gears. |

Re: Spare tire
With the C6Z calipers, I decided to look into whether the stock spare could be made to work. My thought was that with enough clearance, any spare might work. It looks like you would need a 3.5" spacer to clear the C6Z front caliper.
So my next thought was, "Why would I want to drive on that?" At the very best its also very temporary. Just enough to get me to a tire store for a replacement. How about I just let a tow truck do the work? I have a can of Green Stuff or Slime and an air compressor. At least if that "fixes" the flat, it'll ride normally. So I really don't see the use.

Re: Spare tire
In my mind a cheesy spare is better than no spare at all.

Re: Spare tire
I had to use mine once on my QB93 car. Picked up a 2" mending plate sideways. No fix-a-flat would work there, Somewhere I have a picture of it from the back showing one 13" wide tire and one 4" wide one on the rear. Very funny. But it got me where I was going and was OK until the new tire came in. Having said that, I just removed my spare and the carrier in anticipation of going back to a stock exhaust system with cutouts. After testing and using 6 different aftermarket exhaust systems over about 20 years of ZR-1 ownership (most of the time Corsa), in my old age I have decided that an optional quiet ride was attractive. I plan to get some kind of cover or carrying bag fabricated so I can toss it easily in the back when I want to. When it all gets done in the next month or so I will post up the results.--Bob

Bob, I think I would look for a similar alternative. Basically get an 18" wheel w real tire. Throw it into the hatch area for long distance cruising. My current spare will work for a rear tire flat. Maybe you should take a ride in my car and see if you like the Z06 tips for cruise before going back to stock exhaust.
