Anyone done one or got advice to share on how to do it, I need to remove one from one of my cars...trying to save the trim pieces..I remember someone here did it once.

The glass on my 87 is toast, the glass w/install is cheap; $193, the trim piece is the problem. The process for removal is to just compromise the trim....takes too long to get it off undamaged and they lose outdue to labor cost. Trim piece is $250
I do work in ins bob, but in todays day and age if I even work with a vendor who I have a business relationship with ......I can lose my job. So I steer clear of asking for favors, etc...our company is tough on ethics and even perceived improper relationships are grounds for dismissal. I have to sign an agreemnet to that effect once per year.

You mention trim piece@ $250 - I don't follow that.
Your concern is saving the three reveal moldings? The three reveal moldings aren't difficult to save and Rich "Scrrem" had his reveal moldings I believe powder coated before the new install. He of course had a new header/pillar weatherstrip for the install. Your attempt isn't to save the weatherstrip? He did his this past summer and would certainly recall his experience. I'm sure he likely did the removal of the reveal moldings. If I were doing one I'd do that myself also. Jeff "Z51JEFF" did his '84MY and his removal was to an "extreme" and it's documented with snapshots. "Scrrem" is is most recent "Z51JEFF" for a documentation. Lee, you just need to et all of the trim screwes loose. After that, use a good thin paint scraper and a windshield knife to cut the butyl. You can get the trim off without bending it up.
I sandblasted and PC'd my trim on EX5023. I think I may have another set of PC'd trim on the shelf.

LOL I didn't do a pictorial, unfortunately. I was "speed building" in order to get EX5023 to Bowling Green in one piece.

Hey Lee,
The trim comes off pretty easy, just need to make note of where all the screws come out and put them back in the same place. When I had my windshield replaced I had the shop remove and re-install the trim, big mistake!! They used so much sealer and gooop, it looked horrible. It had so much goop, I distroyed the trim getting it off. Luckly I found a repacement set of trim and took it out and had it power coated and re-instaled myself, looked much better. I didn't do a good job of taking pics but did shoot some of the trim, I can certinly send you what I have. PM me your email address. Rich

Lee,
The trim can be removed without damage if one is very careful. You could remove the weatherstrip and then the trim yourself. Then let a glass specialist install the glass. Like Scrrem say's you can probably do a better job of installing the weatherstrip than some glass installers. Keep in mind, handling glass is totally unforgiving. Been there done that. Leave it to an experienced person that is also responsible for breakage. |
