Tonawanda
When I saw the last line in the spec. sheet on the new Corvette engine, it made me feel good:
"The 2014 LT1 engine will be built at the Tonawanda engine plant." I used to live in western New York, and drove by that plant near the shores of lake Erie many times. And when I did, I knew that this was the place that built many of the great engines of all time. from the 409's and Z11 427's, to the Big Rats that ruled the streets in the sixties, that's were they came from. The Karma is good there. Thanks to the President for keeping the heart of Chevrolet still beating.

I don't know about the Presidential accolades! Tonawanda has actually been quite busy the past few years with "newer technology" in GM Powertrain. Take a look at "total engine production" http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/c...tonawanda.html |

Re: Tonawanda
The amount of effort that went into the combustion chamber/piston design is staggering. I'm still disappointed that they can't do variable overlap on the cam lobes- seems like a much easier way to achieve some performance and emissions goals, but there is no doubt that the new Gen5 LT1 will be way ahead of the LS3.
Not to give the engine too much credit, the whole car is what is going to make the C7 awesome. I would imagine that the traction control developed for the ZR-1 will be in the C7 because I do not see how they are going to handle the low end torque rolling on 285 or 295 width tires on the base model. Hopefully the Tonawanda plant will have the quality control needed- I'm not feeling the nostalgia at all. Not sure of the recent history of that plant, but hopefully they have not lost their core competency over the decades and are the best place to make these engines. |

Re: Tonawanda
Brian,
Left up to Romney,Tonawanda would have been parted out. The accolades are well deserved. Thx Bob.
