New 90 ZR1 Owner
I just bought a 90ZR1 with 19438 miles and have a few questions.
1. Need a good shop manual 2. Need good advice in cleaning engine 3. Need a good shop in the Houston, Texas area 4. RPM for idle 5. Need advice in cleaning leather seats I have a 69 and can turn a wrench but this is all new to me. Help is very much appreciated. |

Re: New 90 ZR1 Owner
the shop manuals come up on ebay every so often, not sure where else to look. i'm sure someone will
if the engine hasn't been painted or powder coated, you don't clean it. and never ever wash it. i realize that san antonio is a bit of a haul but http://www.hendersonperformance.com/shop_loc.html is one of the best any where. you won't be sorry idle should be around 800. if you're still running the factory chip this may not happen I use http://www.autogeek.net/optimum-protectant-plus.html for my seats there are some other members in the huston area that will be happy to help you. you're going to need to swap out injectors very soon if they haven't been done already welcome to the club

I also want to know about using a battery tender and a cutoff switch. If I cut the power do I lose memory of the cars settings? |

I recommend the Battery Tender**, and find the little 800 mA units are perfect. Not only may your battery life be doubled, but it is always fresh as a daisy, even in cold weather! **The BTs are more than just a trickle charger. They have a micro processor on board and are programmed to constantly monitor the battery condition and charge as needed without over charging, and trickle at other times; a "smart charger", as it were. As for the the cut-off switch, IMO, forgetaboutit. 1) The battery plates will sulphate, even if the battery is disconnected, whereas the BT will significantly reduce the sulphate layering issue and keep the battery fresh for years longer. 2) Sooner or later, the switch will become intermittent - causing lights to dim and flicker, and these starters don't tolerate low voltage very well. 3) The long term fueling memory will be lost when disconnecting the battery, as well as any codes that may indicate issues. 4) Your radio pre-sets will be lost every time the cut-off switch is used. And dittos on the changing of the injectors, if not already replaced with alcohol tolerant units. Welcome! P.

As mentioned, used ones (and new ones) come up on Ebay. You can also go to http://www.helminc.com/helm/product2...T5K&itemtype=K I know it goes against what others have said, but I have had great luck using Gunk on the motor. Stand by with water and rags. A pressure washer has worked well and I have even done this at a car wash several times. I spray the Gunk on liberally, let it soak for just a couple minutes and then spray it off, keeping it away from openings that will lead to the engine valley as much as possible. I wipe the motor down quickly and start it right away. Never had a problem. You might check the drain, a little tube by the lower bellhousing area, blow air, or run a coat hanger up through it to make sure it's clear. (Do this anyway) Concur, Corey is the "man" in your area, wish he was a close to me as to you. I rode in a 415 ci he built, WOW. Concur, stock chip in 90-91 caused high idle. I use Adams cleaner and then conditioner. Quote:
Hope my comments help, others have/will post up. |

Re: New 90 ZR1 Owner
Thanks for all the advice.
The injectors are original as they are black with a stainless steel clips. I will need to search here for instructions and parts best used. Do the spark plugs and wires need to be changed out at the same time. If yes what spark plugs are best? My car's VIN last four digits are 1964. I was hoping for a shop a little closer that San Antonio. But it is what it is. |

1. The Red paged GM technical manual with the LT-5 suplement is all you will need. I suggest looking over at CO rvette.forum in the WTB WTS section or Ebay. Heres a guy over at Co rvette Forum that has the 91 books and the LT5 suplement for sale. He wants $25 for the LT5 Sup which is a good price. http://forums.*************.com/c4-p...-1991-zr1.html Paste to your browser and where the ***** appear just put in C O R V E T T E F O R U M 2. Plain ole soap and water maybe with a small amount of simple green everything else tends to stain the engine which is why most of us have powder coated our engines by now 3. Corey Henderson place would be worth the trip. Btw I bought my car from Houston many years ago. I plan on visiting Corey for a tune and I live in Phoenix. lol 4. At idle about 800rpm is the norm 5. Anything that adds mositure to the old leather. There are so many fine leather products. Adams a forum supporter here makes a god one.

Avoid the cuttoff switch unless you want to reprogrm the clock and radio all the time as you suspected. The battery tender works very well. Ive been using one for years
