Oil Filter Info
Starting a new thread as a follow up to some earlier info concerning oil filters. In this thread it was mentioned that Marc H. had updated his oil filter testing results and could no longer recommend the Bosch 3401 due to the anti-drain back valve leaking. You can read his update here.
I've been using the Bosch for several years with no significant issues with the chain rattle issue until recently. The last 3 Bosch filters that I've purchased have been progressively worse with regards to chain rattle which makes me wonder if the filters are being manufactured differently, or by a different company. So, to the point ... I just changed oil/filter about 3 weeks ago. The chain rattle is as bad as I've ever heard it and is present when the engine has not been started for an hour or so ... this is my personal confirmation of Marc's findings. AC/Delco 970C ... tried to find it locally with no success. Talked to the parts guy at the local Advance Auto and it's no longer in their catalog ... he called AC/Delco headquarters and was told they had about 100 remaining. I don't know (since I wasn't on the phone) if that means they currently have only 100 or if they plan to make more, or what ... I'm just reporting my findings. Regardless, I asked him to order me some. NAPA 1324 ... our local store does not stock them but they are having a 1/2 price sale on Napa filters this week. I ordered several at $4.28 each and should have them by Friday. If you like NAPA filters you might want to take advantage of the sale, assuming that it's a promotion at all NAPA stores. If you like AC/Delco you might want to see about getting a couple of spares ... just in case. Regardless, please report on this thread anything you find out about future availability. George |

Re: Oil Filter Info
Good news ... we lost our local GM dealer a couple years back with the GM shakeout so I have to look for other sources for parts, etc. George |

Re: Oil Filter Info
Marc's past articles also spoke well of the FRAM TG3985 - but he found they were no longer marketed in the Chicago area.
There was a recent discussion regarding availability of the FRAM TG3985 from several sources in this thread: http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread....ht=filter+fram I also saw a recent email on the LISTSERVE from Hib that spoke poorly of the FRAM filter. I'm thinking he was referring to the PH3985 and HM3985 though, which are of lesser quality. I hope that's the case anyway, as I have half-a-dozen of the TG on the shelf. |
