MD Emissions Testing

In 2008, just after getting the Haibeck 500Hp top end package I had to get the car emissions tested. I was lucky in that they elected to do the tail pipe test rather than the rolling dyno test. The results were:

FY 2008 Hydrocarbons (HC) Carbon Monoxide (CO)
- MD State Standard:......... 220 PPM..............1.20 PCT
- Inspection Reading:..........121 PPM................00 PCT

In 2008 in that they looked under the car (with mirrors), checked the gas tank inlet size, and looked under the hood. This year I drove in, they hooked the car up, checked the tank inlet size, and in a few minutes I drove out. With 6K more miles on the odometer the results were:

FY 2010 Hydrocarbons (HC) Carbon Monoxide (CO)
- MD State Standard:......... 200 PPM..............1.00 PCT
- Inspection Reading:.......... 57 PPM.................00 PCT

It appears a vehicle 20 years and older can be registered as Historic in Maryland which also means they are exempt from emissions testing. My build date was 10-1990 so it looks like if I go ahead and register as Historic, this could be the last emissions test for my Z.

Good news Scott. Do you know if there are any driving restrictions on the car if you get the Maryland historic registration?

Jim, doesn't appear to be mileage restrictions. Historic tages do require the vehicle owner to certify the vehicle will not be used for general daily transportation. From the following web site:

Historic:

- To qualify as a historic vehicle, your vehicle must not have been substantially altered, remodeled, or remanufactured from its original construction, and must be 20 model years or older.
- A historic vehicle 60 years or older may obtain a one-time, permanent, non-transferable registration. This vehicle registration does not qualify for specialty plates.
- Vehicles classified as historic certifies the vehicle will be maintained for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades, tours, occasional transportation and similar uses. The vehicle owner further certifies the vehicle will not be used for general daily transportation or primarily for the transportation of passengers or property on highways. You will need to fill out the Application for Historic or Street Rod Registration (form # VR-096).
