If you can hear knock, its already too much, IMO. When you throw a scan tool on a car, you would be surprised at the amount of knock that you don't hear.

it's not a knock, but rather sounds more like pinging.

That's not what causes the pinging. You're running lean and/or have too much timing. Could be bad gas but regardless, it's not a good thing. I wouldn't continue to push it till it's analyzed and remedied.
