When is a clutch slave cylinder not a clutch slave cylinder?
I have the car up on jackstands getting ready for trip to BG in a few weeks. Changed trans fluid, changed spark plugs, looking at exhaust(see thread), and I thought I would pull clutch slave cylinder to do a look see on the plunger sealing. When I went to drain clutch fluid by opening bleeder valve, the barrel of the cylinder rotated. I was pretty sure that meant new slave cylinder. Ordered a DOM replacement from Advance Auto for $74 plus shipping. Hoping it gets here by Friday. In the meantime, =Jeff= took mine apart and although the plunger seal was on correctly, it was pretty loose in the housing and the ridges of the seal were non-existent. I may have found why my clutch engages near the bottom of the pedal stroke. Stay tuned.

Re: When is a clutch slave cylinder not a clutch slave cylinder?
I was wondering about those. The housing looked like is was cast not stamped, maybe is was just the picture.

Re: When is a clutch slave cylinder not a clutch slave cylinder?
Mine I believe was cast. I posted a link in an earlier post with the vendor who was selling the UK version

Re: When is a clutch slave cylinder not a clutch slave cylinder?
And it may continue to and it may not. My GM/ACD slave is 18 years old and still works fine. Let me know 18 years from now !!!! I know I hate laying on my back at my age. If I replace mine, I want to do it once.

Re: When is a clutch slave cylinder not a clutch slave cylinder?
The Advance Auto slave turned out to be a cast piece altho the website illustration showed what appeared to be a DOM version. I had removed the hydraulic hose from the master in order to allow slave cylinder to drop further so I could undo hose at slave. Unfortunately, I ended up stripping threads inside master when I tried reattaching hose. Word to the wise, aligning the fitting with the female outlet of the master cylinder is a bitch without undoing hose clip on firewall and loosening master cylinder attaching bolts. I think there was an issue with the master to begin with. Al at Brakes Plus to the rescue. He had a DOM master sitting around and so we swapped the guts of his old one with mine.
Internals looked pretty good. This time I attached hose at master before bolting master to firewall. Luckily, the threads on the hydraulic hose were not damaged. Al had given me a spare fitting and double flare tool set if I needed to replace male fitting. Now I'm ready to attach rod to clutch pedal and start buttoning things up followed by bleeding system. Should be on the road later today. We'll see if that addresses the low pedal engagement issue I was having. I hope to "fix" my exhaust constriction next and then should be ready for trip to BG. Thanks Al and =Jeff=. Last edited by XfireZ51; 05-02-2010 at 10:42 AM. |
