I think the P38 was the dual fin lightning the P40 was the war hawk. Yep thats the one I have tri bladed bugger remember once during the spring start procedure (remember that) not removing the finger fast enough to have the cox av gas get into the wound. That will learn ya pretty fast lol That happened to mine as well so using coat hangers the wheels and alum cans to mount the engine I built a rear engine powered prop car that terriorized the neighborhood. ![]() ![]()

Goldy is correct, the P-38 was the twin engine twin boom Fighter, the P-40 was the only front line Fighter the USA had in any numbers when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour. Altho the P-40 could not dogfight with a Zero, it was tough as hell and nothing could match it's speed in a dive. The AVG in China, The Flying Tigers, learned this early on and were very effective knocking the Zero's out of the sky.
There were better, faster and more publicized Planes that came later, but the Good Old P-40 workhorse did the bulk of the work in the early years. |

Yes the P-38 Lightning. I remember it now. Didn't they also call it the
"Black Widow"? The P-51 always struck me as the racehorse of prop fighters. |

The P51 was indeed the race horse of the pack. However for the pacific campaign my favorite was the F4U Corsair. Loved Baa Baa Black Sheep before it was called The Black Sheep Squadron. Pappy Boyington was a stud....

It is built with mostly balsa, the covering will be a Plastic heat activated/ heat shrink film in an Olive Drab with light brown camo spots painted on.
The gear is electric rotating retracts, tail wheel also retracts with a mechanical linkage. It has a YS 91 glow engine that is Supercharged and fuel injected, I believe it puts out around 3.5 hp @ 13,000 rpm. The Plane weights in at about 9 lbs. Not a bad power/weight ratio. |
