Correct - it first appeared at the 1996 One Lap of America at Watkins Glen. Jim Minneker was the driver and was supposed to start behind Sam Haldiman's ZR-1. Sam told Jim to start first because he didn't want to slow him down. The Mallet pooped out on the first lap, and SAMS ZR1 went on to place better than the Mallett overall. There were 5 ZR-1s that ran that
One Lap. The Mallett was/is not a ZR-1.

The whole story is here:

http://www.zr1netregistry.com/ZR1newstrack.htm

which is authored by "SAMS ZR1". Look about 2/3rds of the way down -
the One Lap was run in June 1996.

Qouting Sam:
1996 had 5 ZR-1 teams. Reed Kryder is driving Russ Wilson’s ZR-1 and is car
number 4. R.K. Smith is driving Russ Anton’s 91 ZR-1 and is car #5. Duane
Grahovec with George Hall is #7 and Steve Ahlgrim & Scott Ahlgrim is #9.
Sam Haldiman and Matt Hinman drove #16. This makes a total of 5 ZR-1's
running in this years One Lap."

A partial listing of the final results are listed below:

1996 One Lap
FINAL RANKINGS

3 4 6585
5 5 6505
13 7 5940
4 9 6510
18 16 5355
36 17 4425 <---- the Mallett

the first column is finishing position, second is car number and
third is total points.

All 5 ZR-1s finished ahead of the Mallett.

It could be a modified ZR-1 in chassis/body only and have a small block, splayed valve engine that is S/C'd, not an LT5.
