We are getting two good soaking rains here in N. VA this week, so hopefully it will melt all the remaining snow piles and wash some of this salt and sand off the road. Hope to get the new 380 out to a Cars / Coffee on Sunday Got to get this motor broke in before BG!

Sorry to hear about the weather. Hasn't been too warm up here but we didn't have the difficulties you mention.

When Marc did his 510 package on Warp Ten he removed the secondaries and I have been happy with the setup. No problems; the car has been completely reliable, idles smoothly and runs strong. I recommend it. --Bob

I hesitate to show Technical "How To" in this Who started their ZR1s thread as some guys just want to discuss weather after all this IS not the ZR-1 Technical Postings Section

But to reiterate given I deleted the "How To" Posts in this thread.....I have eliminated the Secondary Vacuum System and Secondary Mechanical System in a 91' and it runs great with Marc Haibeck Chip (Got to have the Chip installed if you eliminate Secondaries). I completely concur with Bob and Paul in that regard to the Secondary Delete Modification. If you are really after Horsepower, eliminating the Secondary Plates in each Secondary Port gives you more unrestricted Air Flow.



On the other hand.....in three other 90's I have kept the Secondaries for the simple reason the Secondary Vacuum System and Secondary Mechanical System are sooooo easy to maintain and once maintained no issues at all for a very long time with the Vacuum Pump coming on with Key on for a few seconds and never hearing the Vacuum Pump again.

Having the Functional Full Power Switch and on the 90's having that Full Power show up on the Screen is all part of having a ZR1

thanks for all the helpful replies on secondaries, vac issues, et al ... it was not my intention to de-rail the original topic of starting our Z's following this terrible winter. I do plan to give the Z some attention later today and will start a new thread if I need additional help or have anything to report. Thanks.

I started mine last night, but maybe for the last time for a while. I'm starting to prep it for a paint job. Seems a shame, timing-wise, with the warm weather arriving and my ZR-1 running so well, but it will be nice to have a shiny Corvette in a month or so.

I think this is close enough to the thread topic: Last week I started my car and was immediately shocked and dismayed by a lot of mechanical noise. I immediately thought there were serious problems inside the engine and started to think it would need to come out and be repaired.

I started it again very briefly to check oil pressure. Gawd the sound was awful. Oil pressure seemed normal.

I took out all the spark plugs and let the engine spin freely with the starter motor. It didn't sound as bad but still sounded abnormal.

All of the plugs looked okay. I did a compression test and all cylinders tested well.

I put it all back together, started it up and after a few seconds it sounded normal.

That was a pretty scary night. Afterwards, I browsed ZR-1.net and based on what I read, it might have been the dual mass flywheel. Since then the car has run great.

I know what you mean with the sound as probably ALL the lifters that were under open valves when you last shut the engine down were collapsed

I like your idea of removing plugs and spinning the crank with the starter motor. That should pump up oil pressure but when you think about it.....plugs in or out the engine will have to spin equal number of times to get oil pressure to the lifters in any event.

But then again, the cam lobe is hitting the collapsed lifter at a much slower speed when you do exactly what you did by removing the plugs and spinning the crankshaft much slower with the starter than when the engine is fired up. That would result in a lot less banging/sound

Once the collapsed Lifters are pressured up with oil, you are good to go
I am thinking most lifters bleed down very very very slowly so it may take a month or more.

Good Idea for a ZR1 that has been sitting for several months or more......

Thinking more......
A camshaft turning at 3,000 rpm (engine at 6,000 rpm) would be hitting the lifters with a lot more force/acceleration than when hitting the lifter when idling at camshaft rotation of say 400 rpm. So I am not so sure the banging on a cold start with some collapsed lifters is so bad at all.

THEY'RE ALIVE!! Oh, what a sweet sound; first time in at least a couple months. Both of 'em - over 1000 hp total, fired right up and continued their rumbling with angry intent. It was beautiful.

Is it SPRING YET???
