I have never bothered to get the oil out of the oil cooler. I figure that changing ~80% of the total oil volume is sufficient at the interval that I use.

However, I have a neat compressed air powered vacuum container that will suck all the oil out of the cooler if we disconnect one of the hoses. Want to give it a try?

If you suck oil out of the cooler, how will you refill it? I don't think you want a 2-quart pocket of air that the oil pump has to fill before it gets oil to the engine.

Definitely change it if you don't know for sure, as you said it is cheap insurance.
