Although I don't own a ZR-1, I do own several Corvettes and drive train from a '91 Z. The motor is in my '67 Camaro but please don't bash me. The car was totaled and so I am giving it a second life. My question is regarding the VSS. I know the gear ratio in the wrecked Z was 3:45 but it is now 3:70. The speed sensor that was in the 6 speed transmission was damaged and needs to be replaced. Here is where it gets interesting. The motor is now coupled to a 700R4 transmission. What speed sensor should I get and what should the colors of the drive gears be to match up with the present rear end ratio? The tire diameter is 27.2" according to Michelin. I joined this site years ago because of all the knowledge you members have . your advise is appreciated.

I believe that likely a drive of 15 and a driven of 41 or 42 would likely be an appropriate start. I don't believe that any other 'drive' could be made to work with that dimension tire. What type of instrument package. The Camaro was originally a cable drive. If the 700R4 is a conventional 'short-tail' there's maybe VSS available that can/will accommodate the cable drive and VSS signal ECM would like to see. Much more info is maybe needed.

The speedometer is now electronic so no cable. The 700R4 has a conventional short tail. It now has a VSS installed but I don't remember what is driving it. It has a 2 pin oval connector but doesn't look anything like the original unit. Before I remove it I was hoping to know what colors the plastic gears should be.

Snapshot and info from your VSS - it could maybe be ID'd from info on it or PIC. They ain't all the same. It might be interesting to see which position on the output shaft the current drive gear is positioned in. 700R4 should have 2 positions available. Short shaft 'non-corvette' is generally thought to go in the first position. Is the current VSS 'center' pinned or is the connector on the perimeter?

Your VSS needs to accept 40 - 45 tooth driven gears. I can maybe ID what you've got.

15 tooth drive (gray) GM# 8642620 Retainer GM# 6261781

41 tooth VSS (yellow) GM# 25513048

42 tooth VSS (green) GM# 25513049

Does the car 'roll' now with the drive-line, tires wheels and weight close to final? I'd rather do a roll of the tire/wheel and use that dimension vs an advertised by tire guy.

Thanks for helping me. The car is on a lift right now and will be for awhile. I didn't think the tire diameter was out of line. I don't really care how accurate the speedometer will be, just like it to be in the ballpark and allow the computer to play with the motor. The VSS in the car now is somewhat flat and black plastic with the connector off set. That is, not in the center.

This wouldn't be correct for you but does your have the connector and retainer fabricated similar to this? Look on yours and see if there's info on yours where this one displays 10456092. Is your black center as well as black connector or maybe black center with white connector OR maybe white center and white connector.

This VSS is offset for the drive gear being installed on the rear most location on the output shaft (CORVETTE).

Pull yours and see what gear is on yours and I'd think likely you'll find a red 'drive' on the output shaft.

Good to see you're good!! It's been interesting. If you'd share the link that you sent me to the car I believe these guys would enjoy it!!

This fellows transmission was built with actually a reluctor wheel and different VSS. Very few 700R4/4L60 were done this way. His configuration was same as found on all of the e-transmissions. It's converted now to 15 tooth and appropriate driven.
