You can get "real codes" with the paperclip. Unless you have emmisions or engine performance issues - you probably don't need a scanner.
I was trying to troubleshoot an idle issue - and a scanner with live data is almost a necessity for that. AutoXray 6000 is a good choice @ reasonable price
