I have a zimmer chip. before he created z-industries.. zimmer did his own chips under his name. there has been comparison tests done on these chips and I remember reading that the zimmer chip was one of the aggressive ones out there. I have a 1990 zr1 #3028 and it runs very strong. Previous owner said, during track days, some of his buddies had 368 cube z's and they could not pull away from him. the only times the 368 did pull a bit harder is accelerating out of turns and that was because they had 4.10 gears.. as soon as he got to speed he was right with them. I dynoed the car a few weeks ago and I pulled a 402 to the wheels on a dynojet dyno.

The only way a prom can be effectively calibrated is with the car that it will be going in is on the dyno. Off the shelf proms are nothing more than a guess as to what level of tune your particular car is in. Maybe you got lucky but beware of a lean running car even though quick will be a nightmare eventually. If the prom is not programmed with the car on the dyno you might as well be throwing darts. Someone like Haibeck who has experience with a large number of ZR-1s in different levels of tune has a better chance of having a generic prom that will work. Unless someone has extensive experience with a large quantity of LT-5s its a crap shoot. Just my opinion. Had a number of experiences that would support it. A track day might not be the best way to evaluate the HP of your car due to all the variables involved. Braking, how quickly one can get back to the accelerator can be more important than horsepower. The person who is on the gas earliest wins. A driver who can get on the gas 20ft. earlier than the other driver has a HUGE advantage. 20 ft. sounds like a big distance but at 70 mph it goes by very quickly. It would take approximately 100 hp advantage to make up that distance. We would teach this to students and they would be amazed at speed differential at the end of the straight after practicing slow in fast out . I am glad your car is running well and it sounds as if you were one of the few very fortunate ones. Just check your air /fuel ratio to make sure it is not too lean. I believe the drag strip would better evaluate your car with MPH numbers.

I agree on that one. mph is where you truly find out how much power your engine is making. elapsed time just means that you have a good set up and you hook. trap speed never lies. If you can trap at over 130 mph you have a fast car making great power..450 to the wheels at least. dyno tuning is always the best option but for those of us who just want to plug in a chip dyno tuning might be to expensive and rough on the equipment.

Mine was done by Jeoff Jeal, way back in the last century. The price was a case of "Old Speckled Hen" ale in the pit area at Beech Bend.
He and his boys drank the ale, cut the chip, and put it in just in time for me to line up for the last run of the day. By chance, it was my relatively stock 91' vs. the legendary "FastLane" Goldstein. In the first fifty feet he went by me with both front wheels a foot off the ground.
Marc Haibeck has the best reputation today for "off the shelf" chips. But a true custom chip for your car can only be properly done on a dyno. If you don't do it that way, you are leaving horsepower on the table. There is no way even the best tuner in the world can optimize the tune of your car unless he has the car in front of him.

Does anyone remember the name of the guy from Jacksonville who was a top ZR-1 dyno tuner twenty years ago? Jim...... something?
He was a former GM employee, and had a lot of the original tuning records from the development of the car.
I watched him dyno tune a 90' ZR-1 that had the top-end done. It took him all day to do it, but he pulled an extra 50 peak HP out of it. He cut at least twenty different chips before it was perfect.

I agree with most of your post but this.
Next to a dyno, the trap speed of the car in the quarter mile gives the best indication of horsepower you can get. A bone stock C4 (375hp.) ZR-1, in good tune, will trap around 110mph. A 405hp. car a couple of mph quicker.

Your e.t. can vary wildly, due to the traction at the track, tires, driver ability, and a host of other factors. Although temperature, and atmospheric conditions do affect power, unless you screw up badly, trap speeds will not vary significantly.
