Default Cams and mismatched heads

had some time today so I sent a note to Sean Hyland to see if he has an interest in doing cams or giving some feedback on them, also sent a note to Norwood Performance about mating mismatched heads/cam covers.

Norwood Performance:
In addition to building ultimate Ferrari engines, James was part of the team that established 47 land speed records in the Oldsmobile Aerotech Aurora V8 program at Fort Stockton in 1992. Photo of James in the car along with official Oldsmobile press release and congratulatory letter are here.

Lee,

Yes you can line bore mismatched cam bores, we do it on Ferrari's from time to time. I'm not familiar with the LT-5 heads so I can' say for certain if it can be done, you might contact Reher-Morrison (817-467-7171), they may be more familiar.

Thanks,
James Patterson

The LT-5 heads did not use bearings for the cams, the cams instead rode on the heads themselves, the heads had cam covers which actually held the cams in the place. The base of the head and the cam cover were #'d and matched; per Lotus/Mercury Marine it was not a possibility to mix a heads and cam covers due to cam tolerences......in the day they could not line bore the heads without too much variation
> So my question is, given technology advancing over the last 20 years, would it be possible to line bore mismatched heads. There are several sets like this and there is an interest in the community to do this due to the limited supply of replacement parts.

I'm not sure Reher-Morrison could help with this...In the non-overhead cam world, I think I might give LSM a try Lee.

Did you ever get a response from Sean? I can almost see his shop from my house. Dad has done some work on a few of Sean's big-dollar Mopar builds that he sells to guys down in the U.S.

Let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Its funny that we can get cam blanks for Ferrari 12 cylinder engines for $100 a piece. I have been thinking about buying some blanks for my Uncle's 1991 TR.
Are LT5 blanks even available? Will SCG part with blanks?

I do know that GM has a nice stockpile of blanks for the Inline 4 Ecotec program. p/n 88958611 for the intakes, p/n 88958612 for the exhaust blanks.

here is a bunch of specs on the Ecotec cams
http://www.crateenginedepot.com/store/PDFS/ECS.pdf

88958648 Performance camshaft kit
Duration @ 0.050" lift is 247? on the intake and 249? on the exhaust
lift is 0.499" intake/exhaust
116?LSA
Quite the cams for 2.0-2.2L of displacement.

Too bad their not flat tappet cams.

peace
