Default clutch slave master or slave cylinder?

How can I determine if my clutch master or slave cylinder is bad? Only drove the car twice last year and twice this. The pedal has been soft for awhile now. The clutch master resevior is empty. Thanks in advance.

Just noticed on the Advanced Auto Parts website. They list the clutch master and clutch slave both by Perfection. The mounting plates appear to be thin and bleeder on the bottom according to the photos. FWIW

For the slave, reach up under the dash along the firewall, if the foam backing is wet it's the master. If it's dry, it's the slave.

How do you "remove the sound insulator panel from under dash"? Is that the plastic piece that covers the top half of the clutch pedal?

Thanks

You don't even have to remove the panel. Just reach up behind the pedal area and the carpet is cut. Just peel it back a smidge.

Is there any under car leaking? Fill the reservoir.

Jeffvette's continually changing eye-candy avatar makes it hard to focus on the thread!

As long as you are going through all the effort,
why not replace both? And wouldn't you be
pissed off (can I say that here?) if you had to
take it down again in the near future to replace
the old part? Unless one is new, my recommendation
is to replace both the master and slave.

zfdoc says that if you do have an issue with the clutch hydraulics, the best solution is to always replace the master and the slave.

check it out.
