Default Change Oil Light

On the way back from the track yesterday my "Change Oil" light came on. I haven't driven the car much since I got it, no where near the 3000 mile mark. The triggering mechanisim for this light, is it perhaps a combination of mileage or time in it's calculation?
Thanks
Rich

As I understand it the change oil light is driven by a calculation. The ECM does the work and uses various inputs such as engine rpm, temperatures, and others are used to determine when the oil is used up so to say. The key thing is calculation is reset using the DIC. Changing the oil does not reset the calculation. So either by calculation the oil has been used up or someone did not reset the computer when the oil was last changed. Hope this helps.

Rich,

You have to reset the timer for the Change Oil Light.

Here is the procedure:

Ignition ON Engine not running.
Press the ENG/MET button twice. The Change Oil Light will flash.
Press and hold the RANGE button ('90-'91) or the GAUGES button ('92-'95) until the Change Oil Light stops flashing (goes out)
You are done.

Did you reset the light the last time you changed the oil?

That's the big question mark. The place that sold me the car in Feb said they had just serviced the car. I haven't driven it very much since Feb, so...either they lied about servicing or the tech didn't reset the light on the service. I am thinking the later just because when I checked the oil, it looks pretty clean. Just to have an accurate baseline, I may just have the oil changed so I know where things stand. It's cheap insurance

Jim,
I may do that. I have the tools and am able to do oil changes, but I have yet to figure out a good way to get the 2 or so quarts of oil out of the oil cooler. How do you do it?

Rich,

I have never bothered to get the oil out of the oil cooler. I figure that changing ~80% of the total oil volume is sufficient at the interval that I use.

However, I have a neat compressed air powered vacuum container that will suck all the oil out of the cooler if we disconnect one of the hoses. Want to give it a try?
