Default Replaced radiator and found?

Well I got the radiator replaced and for me it was a long day. Between working, resting and going for tools and parts it went well. Once I had the old one out it was plain to see that it was stopped up. There was no light coming through the cooling fins. I might have been able to clean it up but I do not think I would have been completely returned to like new. Now she runs very cool as compared to before. I can actually run the A/C in traffic and did not see anything higher than 205 F.

One side issue I had and still do is the low coolant light does not work. Earlier I have replaced the lamp so it is good. Once the coolant was drained I turn the key to ACC and still no low coolant light. So next time I will have to replace the expansion tank. I also wanted to replace the thermostat but I was unable to loosen the bolts holding the housing cover. I just do not have enough _ZZ to loosen them and I do not have a impact wrench. So I left it alone and will have to take it to a shop for this one.

Here are some tips for those who are like me willing to try something for the first time.

1. Buy a replacement hose for thermostat to radiator section. This way you can cut this hose for quicker removal and replacement. My hoses were well seized onto the piping.

2. Be sure to purchase new hose clamps and replace the old ones.

3. Tighten all clamps before replacing the radiator cover.

4. Replace the radiator it is cheap insurance compared to the motor work.

5. Wear leather gloves when cleaning inside the air box. This will save possibility of cutting your hands on the oil cooler.

All in all not a bad job. Take your time and do not get fustrated.

Well Done!

Thanks for the info and tips. What replacement radiator did you use?

Are you running a stock thermostat?

I used the GM replacement radiator which fits what I do with the vehicle. The thermostat I purchased was the stock unit at 195 F. One other item thing you might want to consider is to fill the coolant and test for leaks before you reinstall the cover. This way if there is a leak you can get to it easier.
