Default Was It A Good Day or a Bad Day?

Last summer, just as Covid was backing off enough to allow activities, I registered the Corvette for the first local car show. The day came, and the Corvette wasn?t ready, so I had to go in my Mustang (charity event), while the sign in the window still read 1990 Corvette ZR-1. Got a lot of ribbing and comments about me not knowing what my car was, so this year I was determined, even with the charging system issues, to get the Corvette there.

In preparation, I charged it up last night, got everything loaded up, and started the 10 minute drive to the show. Halfway there, the rear hatch popped open. I pulled off to the side of the road, Figuring I had just not latched it well, and sent my son out to close it. After he had tried half a dozen times, I got out, grumbling about these damn kids not being able to even close the rear hatch, and discovered that I couldn?t close it either. The metal loop, that bolts to the hatch (see attached), had snapped clean off. Looked like a half assed weld done 33 years ago had finally come loose. Well, I guess 33 years isn?t too bad. Deciding that I would not miss the show again, looking like an idiot, I drove the rest of the way to the show with my hatch wide open. Those new struts did a great job keeping it up in the air, even at speeds up to 45 mph.

However, something else odd happened. Seems that overnight, my charging system had decided to fix itself. The gauge was back up at its usual place, and the battery light was off. Wtf?

So I start the day with a buggered up charging system and a working rear hatch, and I end the day with the opposite. Does that make for a good day or a bad day?

For you I would say a great day. But for others who might also raise this question, here is a (somewhat dated!) guide to help you answer it. --Bob

charging or drain problem?

if the hatch was open, so was the electronic latch and the pin switch was closed.

Nope. Charging.
And I?d replaced the struts last year, so it popped open immediately on the latch breaking loose. Those struts were pretty impressive. Over 40 mph and the hatch stayed wide open. Could use it as a pretty nice aerodynamic brake.

In the greater scheme of things, I woke up that morning, so it was a good day.

From a Corvette perspective, it was a bit more up in the air.

Well at least you didn't wake up face down on the pavement and your horn didn't get stuck while following a group of Hell's Angels! Enjoy the Z!--Bob
