Did they originally cold weather test the LT5?
It's cold here in Southern Illinois...it probably hasn't gone above 10 degrees the past week. I haven't even started my Beast since around Thanksgiving, just sitting in storage on a cold concrete floor.....Today I decided I needed to go start it, maybe drive it around. My daily driver is a 2006 Honda Civic Si, which I bought brand new. I go to start the Honda, and it will hardly crank!!!! Now this Honda is as Bullet proof as the LT5, I've never had one issue in 145,000 miles and counting. But it's SO cold it takes me at least 7 tries for it to catch and finally start.......I get to my storage unit, take the cover off my Z, and see the temp gauge on the climate control says it's 7 degrees outside. On THE 1st try, no hesitation or anything, the Beast comes alive!!!!!! I was shocked, I thought it would at least be a weak crank or something. Amazing......once warmed up I drove it for about 2 hours, filled her up and put her away again.
Sorry for being so long winded, but I was just amazed at the reliability and durability of the LT5....Did GM ever cold weather test the LT5???? We all know of the records set out in the desert, but they must of knew this engine would be good for even an owner in cold climates. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk |

If you look on the streets of NY you would swear they are all snow covered.....There all an off white color....Thing is its not snow, its salt.....When there is just a hint of snowfall in NY now they dump tons of salt on the roads...

I'm also interested in winter start-up feedback, as I have to move the car next week to access an engine (454) that I sold. After a few single digit cold nights, will have a day of 46°, night before I'll place an incandescent drop light at the floor under the engine which should help warm it.
Streets around NYC area are excessively salted, the Z's wont be driven till the heavy spring rains wash it all away.

YES, the LT5 was cold tested - CANADA at -40*F. IIRC the cold start tests were described in the HOTB book.

I've see pictures of the cold testing of the test mules in Europe in the snow and ice.

The only problem I have had with starting when it is cold is that the tires don't have much traction at 10 degrees F. Other than that the ZR-1 runs great.
