Fuel gauge DIY fix does not work HELP
I need some help ASAP.. I followed the DIY article on how to clean the fuel gauge sending unit but need help.
help,I just spent2 hours doing the above but I cant get a reading with my meter. I have continuity in the wire(purple) from the connector to the winding connection but when I do as instructed i do not get a reading when I move the float. I even hooked it up to the car and put the key on but no dice..What can be wrong? I dont want to leave tape over the fuel tank overnight and the door closed. Kevin

The 1990 schematic shows the gray wire at the tank connector is the power for FP 1. The purple wire is the sender resistance wire back to the CCM and should show a variable resistance between it and the black wire which is ground when you move the float up and down.

Yes in the DIY article it tells you the purple wire should show a resistance change when you move it but it shows nothing. I even hooked it up electrically to see if it might read and moved the float but nothing. I put it back together and in the tank and as expected no reading.

Well then, that rheostat sender unit is bad. sometimes you can take them apart to see if the wiper is jammed or just needs adjusting but if not then it needs replaced.

The wiper moves freely and I cleaned the contact and the windings per the instructions. How close does that contact have to be near the winding?

Re: Fuel gauge DIY fix does not work HELP
If you look closely you should see that the wiper rubs the winding's and makes contact throughout its length of travel. That's how it get its resistance to change. The wiper is adjusted so that there is not too much pressure on the winding's so as not to wear it out too quickly. You should see a mark on the winding where the wiper has previously made contact. Check the wiper to make sure that there is not a hole in it where it rubs the winding's.
