I admired Neil Armstrong since the days he was flying the X-15. But my real hero was Bob Hoover. The greatest pilot I have every seen. I met him a number of times in the 70's when I was working for Hughes Aviation and seen him fly his routine many times.
Notice toward the end of this video him pouring a glass of ice tea while doing a roll in his Shrike Commander! Watching him fly was a thing of beauty! And a more humble man there never was! Or is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=B09nWQHdRiU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7R7j...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRt6U...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=QzeBLXlZhXQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PftNh...eature=related Last edited by John Boothby; 05-06-2012 at 01:48 PM. |

When I was in the Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton (72-76), I'm pretty sure Bob Hoover flew into the airfield there. His entrance was upside down 10 feet off the deck. He was there to test the OV-10 Bronco engines. It had to be him, how many people fly lemon yellow P-51 Mustangs!!!

The ol boy is 90 now. The FAA pulled his medical a couple years ago, however, the Austrailian gov issued him an Aussie license so he is presumably still at it!!

I've been away from aviation for quite awhile & can't speak to his current status.

I think you are correct. I know they pulled it around 1995 then reinstated him. I can't recall when they pulled it last, but I remember reading an article about his fight with the feds in Flying Mag a couple of years ago, or what seems like a couple of years ago.
I have been out of aviation since 1977. However, I try and keep up with it as much as I can. |
