My first attempt to pass was w/Stainless headers and random tech cats, I replaced the cats w/CA approved cats and it still failed (emissions #'s were virtually unchanged w/the change in cats)

2. Borla challenge exhaust system.
3. Open air temp senser rerout.
4. Finolic plenum spacers.
5. Haibak chip that had been reprogrammed by Corey Henderson.

I would like to know how you even got to the ''testing'' stage as it should have flunked the visual with the LT headers.

Up here they would have sent me packing. I'm just jealous.

Hiya Steve!!
Long time no talk.
I plan on being up there for Cool April Nights, I'll keep you posted.

About the headers, there is a way to get a BAR/CARB waiver for the '90-92's because the catalytic converters are an integral part of the exhaust manifold.
There are no new replacements in the GM inventory, haven't been for years.
All you gotta prove to the smog nazis is that the originals failed, and there are no new ones available anywhere, and nobody makes headers that are CARB approved.
Easier said than done, or so I'm told.
On the '93-95 the cats are a separate unit bolted to the exhaust manifold with a flange and thus are easily replaced.
So in the immortal words of the soup nazi:
NO HEADERS FOR YOU!!!

Hi Tom,

Good to hear from you. If you come up for Cool April Nights we'll grab a beer somewhere and split a waitress... It would be good to get together. Be sure to let me know.

I never gave the 90-92 cat arraingment much thought before but it makes perfect sense. I guess it sucks to be me...or ...another good reason to get the heck out of this state....

I wised up 17 years ago and got out of there. Redding is on the oregon border which is pretty much the middle of nowhere.

Rick:

I grew up there.
I have many fond memories of my misspent youth.
My dad ran the Toyota Stealership in town, my first job was washing new cars.
After doing that for just one summer I decided I wanted to go to college instead.
Muscle cars were common and cheap back then, by the time I left at 19 I'd already had and sold half a dozen or so.
Of course it helped that I got first pick of the trade-ins at Dad's shop.
Wish I had kept some of them, they'd be worth big bucks now. *sigh*
Cruising on Friday and Saturday nights was a big deal for the young crowd then and it wasn't illegal like it is now.
Street races and stoplight to stoplight barnstorming was very common.
My favorite memory (now, not then) was when a local Police Officer (one of my Dads customers) showed up at the shop one fine morning and told my Dad: "We know it's your son, we haven't caught him yet, but when we do we're going to throw the book at him".
Needless to say, my street racing days were numbered after that.
It was probably a good thing that I left for College, otherwise I'd probably still be cooling my heels in the slammer.

Tom! My mother lives in Roseville. My dad lives in Manteca and my step brother lives in north Redding. My step brother has been in San Quinton twice. Folsom and Solidad. He's institutionalized. But he likes living in Redding because he says there's nothing there to get in trouble for living in the hills.
But I've always wanted to know how my ZR-1 would handle the steep streets of San Francisco. That would be fun. But you'd better have a good clutch and good brakes. Some of them are 45 degrees straight up and down like knobb hill.
