Replaced fuel pumps
In the spirit of logging work on my car here in the forums for it's future owner ...
Yesterday I finished replacing the fuel pumps, hoses, clamps, and Y-adapter with Carter's machined aluminum version. This was preventative maintenance - no indication of trouble, but as it's a common area of wear and failure I went ahead and preemptively refreshed everything. Also, it was not that difficult and fairly inexpensive. Car has 23.5k miles. Parts list: 2 x Airtex E3240 fuel pump 2 x Airtex FS1 strainer 1 x Sending unit gasket 1' Gates 27097 3/8" Submersible Fuel Line Hose 1' Gates 27093 5/16" Submersible Fuel Line Hose 2x 3/8" fuel hose clamp 4x 5/16" fuel hose clamp Upon inspection, it was obvious the pumps had never been removed before. Nevertheless, the fuel tank was clean, the plastic Y-adapter was in good shape and not cracked, and the only sign of trouble was a small tear in one of the pump strainers. Replacement was straightforward. I simplified the hose routing for the pumps to eliminate bends that were impossible to duplicate - seems like the factory hoses were shaped a specific way but trying to duplicate the bends with a straight hose would cause a little creasing. Here's the final reassembly: [Update 12/11/18] I had to pull the assembly again because fuel pressure was dropping abruptly after the key-on 2 second pump run. I did not clamp the hoses in the assembly tight enough; in fact I used the wrong size clamps on the 5/16" hoses. Corrected and re-tested.
